As with previous ‘triple-digit’ Canon DSLR models, the 800D is a compact, lightweight and neatly styled DSLR. This should provide ample protection against the kind of gentle knocks and accidental scrapes most cameras experience at some point in their lifetime. The 800D’s optical viewfinder employs a pentamirror design that provides 95% scene coverage at 0.82x magnification. These days, almost all electronic viewfinders are pretty good to use too so while optical viewfinders still have plenty of fans, it’s something that’s starting to feel a little bit old-fashioned in the current climate. While the introduction of Canon’s Dual Pixel AF technology represents a significant step forward for those who like to work in Live View mode, the 800D’s viewfinder-based phase-detection AF system also sees notable improvement from previous triple-digit EOS models. The information and advice supplied by the GUI don’t go into any great detail but is useful if you’re just starting out with a DSLR and aren’t sure how changing key camera settings will affect your images.

The EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens is a sleek and flexible option for everyday shooting. One aspherical element is featured in the optical design to improve sharpness and resolution by minimizing spherical aberrations and distortion, and a Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting. The standard 18-55mm zoom lens is designed for APS-C-format Canon DSLRs and provides a 28.8-88mm equivalent focal length range. Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions. An STM stepping AF motor realizes smooth, near-silent autofocus that is complemented by advanced AF algorithms and a high-speed CPU for fast AF performance. Additionally, a full-time manual focus override is also available.

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens from Canon is a flexible zoom well-suited for a variety of subjects, ranging from portraiture to wildlife. Additionally, also aiding both photo and movie recording, an Image Stabilizer system compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working with slower shutter speeds. Telephoto zoom designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, this lens is also suitable for use with APS-C models where it provides a 112-480mm equivalent focal length range. Lens Information Display on the top of the lens barrel clearly highlights focusing distance, focal length, and Image Stabilizer amount. An Image Stabilizer compensates for up to four stops of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting when working in difficult lighting conditions and with slower shutter speeds.
